Soroptomists seeing red about endometriosis

We’re very pleased to announce that the Soroptimists International Great Britain and Ireland will be partnering with Endometriosis UK to raise awareness of endometriosis.

Soroptimists International is a volunteer organisation that works to improve the lives of women and girls in local and international communities.

At their latest National Conference the Soroptimists International Great Britain and Ireland voted to take on a two year plan of action around endometriosis.  This includes research into local availability of information for women with endometriosis, how long diagnosis takes and what treatment is available. This information will be used to lobby legislators and health providers. They also aim to raise awareness of endometriosis in young girls and to alert health providers and the general public to endometriosis symptoms and the importance of early diagnosis.

"In these days of modern medicine, no women or girls should have to suffer like this."

Endometriosis is a common gynaecological condition, affecting an estimated 1 in 10 women of reproductive age in the UK. Around 1.5 million women in the UK and 176 million women worldwide have the disease, around the same number who suffer from diabetes.

Diagnosis of the disease is difficult, with the average diagnosis time in the UK being approximately 7 years. Education, careers, prospects, opportunities suffer as a result, with fertility and planning for a family also being compromised. Awareness and early diagnosed are vital to help women affected by the condition be able to take control and make decisions to suit their lives.

We’re looking forward to working with Soroptomists International Great Britain and Ireland and increasing understanding of endometriosis.
