Surgery

Factsheets about the different types of surgery are available from the website, please click here

Conservative surgery aims to remove and destroy the deposits of endometriosis. This is usually done during a laparoscopy – the surgeon can either cut out and remove the endometriosis or use heat, a laser or an electric current to remove the visible spots of disease.  In addition, organs that are impaired or tethered by adhesions can be freed and put back in their place. Adhesions can be removed. This surgery can help to improve fertility. All surgery carries risks, so please discuss your options in full with your doctor. Although surgery can provide relief from symptoms, they can recur in time.

More radical surgery can be considered if a woman has not responded to drug treatments or conservative surgery and is not planning to start a family.

Hysterectomy:  The removal of the womb from the body during surgery. There are several different ways this is done, see below:

  • Total hysterectomy:  the removal of the womb (uterus) and the cervix.
  • Sub-total hysterectomy:  the removal of just the womb (uterus).
  • Total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oopherectomy:  removal of the womb (uterus), cervix, ovaries and fallopian tubes.
